Redistricting
The U.S. Census Bureau released 2020 Census data in August 2021, and the results showed a growth in population across Riverside and San Diego Counties and a potential undercount across Imperial County due to the pandemic. It is now up to the California Redistricting Commission, our counties and their redistricting commissions, and other government entities across the state to decide how to redistrict.
Redistricting, the process of redrawing the boundaries that determine which elected officials represent us, happens once every ten years. The lines are drawn based on the results of the U.S. Census. In California, The Citizens Redistricting Commission, which was created when voters passed the Voters First Act in 2008, redraws the boundaries of California’s Congressional, State Senate, State Assembly, and State Board of Equalization districts. The public has a chance to look at proposed redistricting maps and provide their feedback before December 23, 2021. Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest is organizing supporters throughout our three-county region to provide written and/or verbal public comment to help shape districts. If you’d like to get involved please contact [email protected].
Accessible Public Restrooms
Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest and the Invest in San Diego Families Coalition will be advocating for accessible bathrooms and the building of new facilities in different parts of the county. Access to bathrooms is a matter of equity and health. Building new bathrooms and improving the quality and cleanliness of existing bathrooms will improve public health and allow people to access a basic need with dignity and privacy.
