Taking Action Against Surveillance Technology in San Diego

Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest and our community partners are standing up against proposed new surveillance technology in the city of San Diego. The surveillance system being proposed has the potential for harm and could endanger patients seeking abortion care who must travel from out of state.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest is urging the San Diego City Council to table any action related to approving San Diego Police Department policies and procedures on a campaign for Smart Streetlights or Automated License Plate Recognition until concerns with the technologies have been addressed, and the draft policies and procedures have been fully vetted by a complete Privacy Advisory Board.

We encourage you to contact your local city Councilmember’s office and urge them to respect the vetting process.

San Diego County Women’s Hall of Fame Inductees

We are deeply humbled to share that on March 18, 2023 Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest was inducted to the Women’s Museum of California’s San Diego County’s Women’s Hall of Fame as the 2023 Advocate for Equality.

We would not be able to do this work without the remarkable conviction and commitment of our staff, board of directors, volunteers, donors, and advocates. Each and every one of you are the reason our doors remain open, and we are able to provide the high quality, compassionate care people need and deserve.

We are so proud to continue to work together toward a world where sexual and reproductive rights are basic human rights, and where people are trusted to make the best decisions for their health and their lives.

Harmful Riverside County Board of Education Resolution Struck Down

On Wednesday, April 5, 2023 a member of the Riverside County Board of Education proposed a harmful resolution for a Parental Bill of Rights that would, among many things, require school personnel to notify parents of a child’s use of gender pronouns in school. The proposed resolution would have also required school officials to notify parents whenever students sought confidential mental health services, a right granted by California law.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest (PPAFPSW) immediately recognized that the proposed resolution was a direct violation of a student’s right to privacy and confidentiality, noting that the resolution could discriminate and harm trans youth.

Our Public Affairs team quickly organized community members and worked with partner organizations – including Trans Community Project, LGBTQ Community Center of the Desert, Equality California, Desert Sands Teachers Association and The California School Employees Association — to coordinate and prepare for public comment at the April 5th open meeting

We are happy to report that after hearing public comments, the resolution was successfully struck down in a resounding 6-1 vote. We  stand proudly and resolutely with LGBTQ+ youth and affirm their right to safety, privacy, and the health care they need.

City of Riverside Redistricting has new Ward Maps

Since 2020, Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest (PPAFPSW) has been working with the Black and Brown Redistricting Alliance across Riverside County on accurate census counts and fair maps through the redistricting process. Redistricting is the redrawing of electoral district boundaries based on the population count provided by the census.

Our Public Affairs team has advocated for fair maps across all levels of government – Federal, State and across our tri-county region of San Diego, Riverside and Imperial. Since the City of Riverside will host its next local elections in 2024, we recognized that new ward maps needed to be drawn in 2023.

PPAFPSW has ensured that the voice of PPGA students at UC Riverside helped shape the City’s new map by keeping the University neighborhood together. We are pleased the City of Riverside map will include 3+ voting rights acts per ward, a true victory for any local map!

The new map has determined the ward boundaries for the 2024 city council election in wards 1, 3, 5 and 7. Find the new map here.

Downtown Riverside Condom Crawl

In February, Planned Parenthood of the Pacific Southwest and Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest hosted a Condom Crawl during National Condom Week in Downtown Riverside. Volunteers met at a monthly volunteer night to assemble goodie bags, then headed to Downtown Riverside to pass out 150 condoms, dental dams, lube, connect, and have fun!

The goal of this event was to spread information on the importance of using barrier methods for safer sex, and to let residents of the City of Riverside know that Planned Parenthood provides a full range of reproductive health care services.

We are getting ready for even more activities in the City of Riverside! To sign up to volunteer, or to find out other ways to get involved, click here. Interested in organizing a Condom Crawl yourself? Click here to learn more.
