San Diego, CA - Today, the United States Supreme Court held oral arguments in a challenge to a Mississippi law that bans almost all abortions after the 15th week of pregnancy. The case, Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization, is in direct conflict with Roe v. Wade, which made laws that ban access to abortions prior to fetal viability unconstitutional.

Below is a statement from Darrah DiGiorgio Johnson, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest:

“Today, the Supreme Court heard oral arguments for the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization case and we are hopeful the Court will uphold Roe v. Wade and protect access to abortion and reproductive rights for millions of people. By taking this case, the Court is revisiting nearly 50 years of precedent that has protected people’s access to safe and legal abortion in the United States.

“Recently, Guttmacher Institute issued a report showing the devastating effects on abortion access that would occur should the U.S. Supreme Court weaken or overturn Roe v. Wade. The report shows a 2,923% increase in out-of-state women of reproductive age who would find their nearest clinic now located in California. Additionally, if Roe falls, over half of all U.S. states could move to ban abortion. This data shows how dire the state of sexual and reproductive health care is across the country, and just how damaging it can be to restrict access to abortion.

“The Supreme Court must uphold Roe v. Wade and protect everyone’s right to decide if and when to start a family. At Planned Parenthood, we will do everything in our power to fight back against attacks on our reproductive freedoms and rights - no matter what. We will always fight against any and all attempts to deny patients the health care they need and deserve, including safe, legal abortion. We won’t stop until we ensure that access to health care doesn’t depend on who you are or where you live.”
