PPAMM’s 2022 Storyteller’s Bureau, a diverse group of 12 volunteers from across the affiliate region, meets monthly for speaking and advocacy training and is already stepping up to the mic. Our storytellers using their lived experiences to break stigma, moving toward compassion and understanding for all.
Abby from San Jose testified before the California Senate Health Committee for SB1142, a bill to support the critical work of abortion funds. You can hear her powerful testimony here about her own challenges trying to find timely access to an abortion, even in California.
Just Take Care of It: A community conversation around abortion stigma – This virtual event was held in collaboration with our Nevada partners Planned Parenthood Rocky Mountains, Planned Parenthood Votes Nevada and the Wild West Fund and provided a space for all attendees to better understand stigma as well as how to stop it. Two of our storytellers illustrated this by sharing their own abortion stories.
One of our anonymous storytellers is also working on an op-ed for a northern Nevada publication, where she will detail her experience with abortion soon after Roe v. Wade was decided in 1973. Her need to remain anonymous illustrates the stigma that those who have had abortions continue to face.
We are proud and honored to work with so many wonderful people who are willing to share their stories. Their advocacy helps people throughout our communities get better access to services and helps people understand that abortion care is health care.
