Omaha, Nebraska—Nebraskans’ access to safe and legal abortion is in jeopardy, after voters Tuesday elected candidates who want to outlaw abortion.
Although reproductive rights champions fell short at the polls, Nebraskans re-elected incumbents Wendy DeBoer, Megan Hunt, and Machaela Cavanaugh, all of whom worked to successfully block four abortion bans in the past year and expand reproductive health care in the state.
“Abortion is still legal in Nebraska,” said Andi Curry Grubb, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska Executive Director. “Now, it is our job to hold our elected officials accountable and remind them that Nebraskans are the second house. Our goal remains clear—no bans ever. No further restrictions on abortion care. When politicians who want to strip away our rights take office in January, Nebraskans will stand up against continued attacks on our health care and reproductive rights.”
The U.S. Supreme Court in June overturned Roe v. Wade, handing abortion rights to state lawmakers to decide. With politicians who want to ban abortion in power, sexual and reproductive health care will be under attack, along with voting rights, LGBTQIA rights, and common sense gun legislation. Currently, 17 states have banned or have near total bans on abortions.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Nebraska ran its largest election program in history, investing in organizing across the state, digital ads, direct mail and volunteer engagement. Since the U.S Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade, hundreds of Nebraskans have signed up to volunteer with Planned Parenthood, donated money, and worked to elect Planned Parenthood champions to office.
“Politicians who want to ban abortion will continue to push their extreme agendas. And Nebraskans, a majority of whom support legal abortion, will be there fighting every step of the way. We are on high alert. We’ve faced tough challenges before, and we will face more in the future. But we’re never backing down,” Curry Grubb said.
