Anti-abortion Extremist Governor Mike DeWine Takes Office
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Statement on Inauguration

Columbus, Ohio – Moments ago, Mike DeWine was sworn in as the 70th Governor of Ohio. While on the campaign trail, Mike DeWine made his extreme, anti-abortion agenda clear. In an interview earlier this morning, Governor DeWine doubled down on his proud commitment to sign the dangerous and unconstitutional six-week abortion ban. Six-weeks into a pregnancy is before most women know that they are pregnant. This ban would take away a woman’s right to make her own medical decision before she knew she had a decision to make.

Statement from Iris E. Harvey, President, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

“As Governor Mike DeWine enters office, we are prepared to continue the fight to protect the reproductive rights and access to the full range of reproductive health services, including safe and legal abortion in Ohio.

“One of the top priorities of the DeWine administration is childhood development, health, and wellbeing. If you are not willing to support women and their health and well-being, you cannot support that of children. We know that children largely depend on women and mothers for their care. This is an unauthentic promise to the women and families of Ohio.

“Governor Mike DeWine is recognized as one of the most extreme anti-abortion politicians in the country. Reproductive rights supporters are ready to hold him accountable and ensure that high quality health care and education like the services provided by Planned Parenthood are protected for the tens of thousands of Ohioans who rely on them to live healthy, full lives.”

Every Ohioan deserves the right to control their own body, life, and future without politicians getting in the way. Reproductive rights advocates will continue to organize and take action to protect reproductive freedom and health care access today, tomorrow, and throughout this administration.
