Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Statement on Repeal of Global Gag Rule

COLUMBUS, OH — Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Vice President of Government Affairs & Public Advocacy Lauren Blauvelt-Copelin released the following statement regarding President Biden’s repeal of the “Global Gag Rule”:

“Repealing the global gag rule is a strong first step to undoing the Trump administration’s damage to reproductive health efforts worldwide. Here in Ohio, we’ve seen the damage gag rules can do firsthand – after the implementation of a similar rule here at home, Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region was forced to close two health centers due to the loss of funding, adding additional barriers to care for those who need it most.

Making matters even worse, this damaging, discriminatory policy has gone into and out of effect half a dozen times since it was first implemented by President Reagan in 1985. 70% of Americans oppose the global gag rule and the limits it imposes on reproductive health and rights around the world. While we applaud its end, we urge lawmakers to ensure it can never be put in place again.”
