Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio Urges No Confirmation Before Inauguration

COLUMBUS, OH — Following news that President Trump nominated Judge Amy Coney Barrett of the Seventh Circuit Court of Appeals to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat on the Supreme Court, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio issued the following statement:

Statement from Lauren Blauvelt Copelin, Vice President of Government Affairs and Public Advocacy at Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

“Justice Ginsburg stood for freedom, justice, and equality for marginalized people for her entire career, and a court with any Trump nominee on it is a present, real threat to that legacy, to Roe v. Wade, and to healthcare access for millions of people across this country. A court with Judge Barrett on it would be wholly out of step with the majority of Ohioans, who support safe, legal access to abortion by a wide margin.

For months, Ohio Sen. Rob Portman and his Republican colleagues have refused to move forward with bills addressing the COVID-19 pandemic, yet now they are intent on forcing nomination hearings in just 38 days. The next Supreme Court Justice is going to hear cases that will define access to reproductive health care for decades to come, and so the American people deserve to have their voices heard. Senate Republicans – including Sen. Portman – created this precedent, and they must now abide by it. This vacancy must not be filled before a new President is inaugurated in January 2021.”
