Planned Parenthood Affiliates in Ohio Celebrate Victory in June Medical Services L.L.C. v. Russo

COLUMBUS, OH — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States issued a 5-4 decision in June Medical Services L.L.C. v. Russo, ruling that a Louisiana law requiring that health centers providing abortion services have admitting privileges to a nearby hospital represents an undue burden and is unconstitutional.

Statement from Iris E. Harvey, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio and Kersha Deibel, President & CEO of Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio Region:

“The Supreme Court just reaffirmed precedent and sided with abortion providers in Louisiana in their case, confirming what we’ve known all along: restricting access to abortion until it is inaccessible is unconstitutional.

Reproductive health is essential, and abortion access is essential, no matter what ZIP code you live in or what state you call home. Today’s decision is a victory for reproductive freedom, but the fight for access to health care is far from over.

We’re committed to supporting patients in Ohio who make the decision to have an abortion. People, not politicians, must be allowed to exercise control over their own bodies. It’s a fundamental human right, and we’ll never stop fighting for it. Our doors, as always, remain open.”

Statement from Lauren Blauvelt-Copelin, Vice President of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

“That this case even made it to the Supreme Court was the result of decades of political attacks, medically unnecessary laws, and courts packed with judges that are hostile to reproductive rights. While we celebrate with Louisianans in their victory, this isn’t the end of the fight — we’re prepared to defend against whatever opponents of reproductive freedom might still have in store for us.”
