Six-week Abortion Ban Veto Override is Defeated
Ohioans show visible support for access to safe, legal abortion for all

Columbus, OH – Despite the Ohio House voting to override Governor Kasich’s veto of the six-week abortion ban, the Ohio Senate was unsuccessful in their attempt to do the same. Anti-abortion politicians attempt to override the dangerous and unconstitutional six-week abortion ban failed. The bill failed to receive the votes needed and was defeated.  

This victory came after the Freedom of Choice Ohio Coalition Stop the Bans Day of Action where nearly one hundred reproductive rights supporters from across the state held a rally in front of the Ohio Statehouse before session started. It is clear that state lawmakers heard Ohioans, loud and clear, and for a change, did right by the people of this state and stopped this extreme and harmful abortion ban.

Statement from Iris E. Harvey, President and CEO, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

“Today, reproductive rights supporters’ voices were heard. Patients and physicians can breathe a little easier knowing that the six-week abortion ban was defeated.  

“While we are claiming today’s important victory, we acknowledge that just last week the abortion method ban, which would ban the safest, most common second-trimester abortion procedure, was passed, making it the 21st restriction to reproductive rights and abortion access to become law since 2011.

“Because the people of this state raised their voices, held their elected officials accountable, and never wavered in their support for reproductive rights and abortion access – we stopped the dangerous and unconstitutional six-week abortion ban In its tracks.”

Every Ohioan deserves the right to control their own body, life, and future without politicians getting in the way. Reproductive rights supporters will continue to stand against unconstitutional abortion bans and fight to protect access to safe, legal abortion into the New Year and beyond.
