U.S. Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Rules to “Defund” Planned Parenthood
Court upholds law that will drastically restrict access to critical health care for Ohioans

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Earlier today, the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit ruled against Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio as well as Planned Parenthood Southwest Ohio Region in the case to defund the organization’s educational and outreach programs. Read the full opinion here.

Statement from Iris E. Harvey, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Ohio:

“Today’s ruling is a direct attack on health care access for Ohio’s most at-risk communities. It’s shameful that politicians like Mike DeWine and John Kasich insist on blocking people from accessing essential reproductive health care and education in our state.

“It’s no coincidence that this ruling came down on the same day the House heard testimony for a bill that would use taxpayer dollars to implement a costly, anti-abortion miseducation campaign in schools and the likely Senate committee vote for the dangerous six-week abortion ban – a bill that Governor DeWine has promised to sign. It’s clear that this is a concerted effort to block Ohioans’ from accessing to the full range of reproductive health care, including safe and legal abortion.”

Planned Parenthood will thoughtfully evaluate the impact of this ruling and will explore all of the options, including continuing litigation.
