Sacramento – Today, following the widely anticipated debate between Governor Gavin Newsom and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California President & CEO Jodi Hicks issued the following statement:

“On behalf of the entire Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California staff and supporters, we are proud to be Californians today. Tonight’s debate has shown the country just how out of touch Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is with Americans. Nearly two thirds of people in the United States believe that abortion should be legal in all or most cases – more in Florida - yet earlier this year, Governor DeSantis signed a law that would ban abortion after 6 weeks, before most people know they are pregnant. And make no mistake he would sign a national abortion ban.

“While California stands a proud reproductive freedom state and has joined together with other states to champion access to essential reproductive health care – Florida continues to fall behind under DeSantis’ leadership. Governor DeSantis uses scare tactics and misinformation, but the reality is – you are more than 60 times likely to die giving birth in Florida than you are having an abortion anywhere in the country. California’s Governor trusts women and doctors. Florida’s Governor criminalizes them.

“We applaud Governor Newsom for standing up to bullies like Governor DeSantis and thank him for having the courage to champion important issues like reproductive freedom.”
