SACRAMENTO — Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) today announced its opposition to the politically motivated and misguided recall of Governor Gavin Newsom.
Statement from Jodi Hicks, PPAC President/CEO, in opposition of the recall:
“The attempt to recall Governor Gavin Newsom is nothing but a politically-motivated stunt that purposefully distracts from the state’s response to the COVID-19 public health crisis and urgent need to address existing health care disparities. Pushing forward a disruptive and costly recall effort, driven largely by far-right extremists focused on their own agenda, threatens the health of our state at the worst time possible.
“Governor Newsom ran on a campaign prioritizing health care for Californians—a promise he’s remained committed to while leading our state during a devastating global pandemic, the likes of which we’ve never experienced in modern history. A leading health care advocate, Planned Parenthood in California is proud to stand alongside him in the effort to defeat the politically charged and dangerous recall, so we can focus on the real work ahead.
“During Governor Newsom’s time in office, he has doubled the state budget investment in sexual and reproductive health care, declared California a reproductive freedom state, and expanded access to essential services, and there is more to do. California needs Governor Newsom’s continued leadership as we seek to undo the harms of the past four years and advance health care coverage, access, and rights for all people.”
Planned Parenthood affiliates in California have an important role in California’s public health care system. With over 100 health center locations serving every California county, Planned Parenthood’s health centers offer access to preventive and whole person care including birth control, cancer screenings, STI testing, gender-affirming care, and abortion. Providing 1.3 million patient visits a year, a third of all Planned Parenthood visits nationally occur at a California Planned Parenthood health center.
