SACRAMENTO – Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) released the following statement from President and CEO Jodi Hicks regarding reproductive freedom being officially enshrined in the state constitution with Proposition 1 being implemented after the Secretary of State certified the vote count on December 16. The state constitution now officially includes the fundamental right to access abortion and choose or refuse contraception:

“Today is a historic day for California, and for all who may need an abortion or want to make decisions about contraception. Our State Constitution now officially includes the words abortion and contraception after voters overwhelmingly approved Prop 1 in November. As of today, the State Constitution reflects what the vast majority of Californians, and the rest of the country, want – the fundamental right to abortion and to choose or refuse contraception.

“As other extreme politicians across the country propose and implement hostile bans on sexual and reproductive health care, California serves as a stark contrast, a shining example of what can be done when those who believe in reproductive freedom come together. While we celebrate this momentous step, we also know there is much more work to be done for those here in California and for those who may be forced to seek care here. Planned Parenthood in California will continue to fight to protect and expand access to abortion care and show what is possible when you center patients and providers, not political ideology.”
