Californians Enshrine Constitutional Protections for Abortion & Contraception

PPAC Endorsed Candidates on Path to Sweep Statewide Offices

SACRAMENTO—Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) released the following statement from President and CEO Jodi Hicks regarding California voters overwhelmingly supporting Proposition 1, the constitutional amendment to protect abortion and contraception, as well as champions for sexual and reproductive rights on the ballot for statewide office:

“Tonight, Californians made history – becoming the first state to explicitly enshrine abortion and contraception in our state constitution! Here in California, voters used their voice to say loud and clear they support access to abortion and contraception - safeguarding peoples’ rights for generations to come. This overwhelming victory once again shows California’s leadership in moments of national crisis and that our values will not be compromised by a handful of conservative extremists on the U.S. Supreme Court pushing a political agenda while ignoring facts, medicine, and science.”

“Californians also continue to elect champions for sexual and reproductive health care, setting the state up to make more progress towards a more equitable and accessible health care system, including sexual and reproductive care like abortion. We look forward to working with our elected allies in the coming months and years as California continues to show the country what is possible when leaders follow the facts, listen to experts, and center the people they represent.”

In addition to Proposition 1 winning tonight, PPAC endorsed candidates are on the path to sweeping the statewide office races: Gavin Newsom (Governor), Eleni Kounalakis (Lt Governor), Rob Bonta (Attorney General), Dr. Shirley Weber (Secretary of State), Fiona Ma (State Treasurer), Malia Cohen (State Controller), Ricardo Lara (Insurance Commissioner) and Tony Thurmond (Superintendent for Public Instruction).

Statewide ballot measures protecting access to abortion appear to be on a similar path to California’s proposition 1, showing that protecting access to abortion is a winning message across the country – regardless of a state’s political history.

ADDITIONAL BACKGROUND

Throughout the election cycle, Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and its seven affiliates played a central role on the campaign trail. Not only was abortion and Planned Parenthood highlighted in key statewide TV ads (like Governor Newsom, AG Rob Bonta, State Controller Malia Cohen & more), but access to abortion was central in ads regardless of platform, up and down the ballot, and across the state.

PPAC and its seven affiliates participated in numerous GOTV efforts across the state, including walking, texting, and events – reaching more than 3 million Californians through these efforts. PPAC and the seven affiliates worked closely with the “Yes on Prop 1” campaign to increase awareness and use our collective platforms as trusted voices in our respective communities.

PPAC and its affiliates C3 and PAC organizations ran digital awareness ads across the state, with an interest in key geographic regions. Combined, these ads reached more than a million California women of color under the age of 40 – a key voting block and a significant portion of Planned Parenthood’s patient base.
