SACRAMENTO – Today, Senate Republicans voted to defund Planned Parenthood as part of President Trump’s sweeping agenda to cut Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for billionaires.

Defunding Planned Parenthood is a backdoor national abortion ban that would devastate health care access for people in states like California where abortion remains legal.

If this bill is signed into law by President Trump, potentially as early as the end of this week, the more than 80% of Planned Parenthood patients in California who rely on Medi-Cal (the state’s Medicaid program) would have their health care put in jeopardy overnight.

In response, Jodi Hicks, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California issued the following statement:

“Today, Senate Republicans voted to take away health care to the nearly one million people in California who get essential health care at Planned Parenthood health centers. If this bill is signed into law by President Trump, Californians will suffer. Cancers will go undetected, STIs will go untreated, birth control will be harder than ever to get, and the public health infrastructure of California’s most vulnerable communities will break down.

“Despite these political attacks from anti-abortion and anti-Planned Parenthood lawmakers in Washington, Planned Parenthood health centers in California are committed to providing essential sexual and reproductive health services, including abortion care.

“We are grateful to Senator Padilla and Senator Schiff for voting against this One Big Harmful Bill and for continuing to fight for reproductive health care access in California. As representatives of the state with the largest Medicaid population and the most Planned Parenthood patients nationwide, they understand the irreplaceable role Planned Parenthood health centers play in California’s health care system and the widespread devastation this bill would cause to not just reproductive freedom but to basic health care access in our state.”

California will be disproportionately harmed if Congress defunds Planned Parenthood nationwide:

  • California Planned Parenthood health centers serve one-third of all Planned Parenthood patients nationwide.
  • Every year, Planned Parenthood health centers in California provide more than 1.3M services to more than 1M patients, including STI testing and treatments, Pap tests, breast exams, birth control, HPV vaccines, gender-affirming care, and more.
  • No other provider can step in and replace Planned Parenthood for the patients that will lose care, according to new Guttmacher Institute research
  • Defunding Planned Parenthood for just one year will cost taxpayers nearly $52M over 10 years.

Next, the bill will head back to the House of Representatives, where in May all nine California Congressional Republican members voted to defund Planned Parenthood as part of the House version of the bill.

  1. Doug LaMalfa (CD-01)
  1. Kevin Kiley (CD-03)
  2. Tom McClintock (CD-05)
  3. Vince Fong (CD-20)
  4. David Valadao (CD-22)
  5. Jay Obernolte (CD-23)
  6. Young Kim (CD-40)
  7. Ken Calvert (CD-41)
  8. Darrell Issa (CD-48)

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California and local Planned Parenthood advocacy organizations will make sure California’s representatives in the House understand that defunding Planned Parenthood means stripping their own constituents of access to health care.
