Two Bills Successfully Pass CA Senate; Five Bills Successfully Pass CA Assembly

SACRAMENTO—Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) released the following statement from Legislative Director Molly Robson on the California Senate and Assembly passing the seven bills that make up the PPAC sponsored legislative package, aimed at protecting and expanding access to abortion services in California, through their houses of origin:

“California leaders once again demonstrated their commitment to ensuring the state remains a ‘Reproductive Freedom state’ by moving seven bills forward that are aimed at not just protecting access to abortion, but expanding it, under increasing threats nationwide. As more states pass hostile and extreme bans, California is working collectively and preparing collaboratively like never before. Knowing those bans will results in millions of people losing access, it is imperative California policymakers continue to take swift action to best prepare the state and help ensure residents, and people forced to seek care here, are able to access abortion services when they want and need it. Doing so will allow for a more patient-centered and equitable health system across California – a system that meets the moment of national crisis we are currently in.”

The bill package specifically seeks to provide civil and criminal protections for patients and providers here in California, establish a fund to provide financial support for practical and logistical assistance someone may need when accessing abortion (childcare, travel costs, food, lodging, etc.), create a state supported website with comprehensive information regarding abortion care, services, and resources available here in California, increase the workforce related to abortion services throughout the state, and more.

Planned Parenthood looks forward to working together, just as it has done in the past, with our partners, the authors of these bills, and the broader committees and respective chambers of the California Legislature to see that the seven Planned Parenthoods across California, their 100+ health centers, and most importantly the patients that seek care are heard, advocated for, and championed in the coming months.
