President Trump Signs Bill Defunding Planned Parenthood, Impacting Nearly One Million Patients in California Annually

SACRAMENTO – Today, President Trump signed into law his “One Big Beautiful Bill” – stripping Medicaid from millions of Americans and defunding Planned Parenthood. This means that Planned Parenthood health centers in California are prohibited from receiving federal reimbursement for any of the services they provide to patients that access care through Medi-Cal programs, including birth control, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, wellness exams, and more.
Statement from Jodi Hicks, CEO and President of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California:
“The irony is not lost on those of us who care about civil rights and reproductive freedom that President Trump signed this bill of devastation on Independence Day. Because nothing says freedom like a backdoor abortion ban.
“Today, we are not celebrating. Today, we are mourning for the estimated 17 million Americans who will lose their health care coverage. We are mourning for the countless patients who will not be able to access the live-saving care they need. We are mourning for the last vestiges of reproductive freedom in our country – which now hang in the balance in access states like California where federally-defunded Planned Parenthood health centers are the backbone of abortion care.
“Make no mistake, this fight isn’t over. The stroke of Trump's pen does not erase Planned Parenthood and what California stands for as a reproductive freedom state.
“As we navigate this unprecedented moment, we want Californians to know Planned Parenthood health centers in our state remain open to serve patients. We’re not backing down and we’re not giving up, no matter what.”
