SACRAMENTO – Jodi Hicks, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC), issued the following statement congratulating Assemblymember Shirley Weber on her appointment as the next California Secretary of State, the first Black woman to serve as Secretary of State in California history.

“As an Assemblymember representing the 79th Assembly District, Dr. Shirley Weber has been a true champion for health care access and comprehensive education, while continuing to fight for more equitable institutions and systems. From authoring key legislation ensuring California’s youth have access to sex education that is comprehensive and LGBTQ+ inclusive, to pushing for reform in California’s criminal justice system, she’s been a tireless advocate for change.

“Because of generations of structural racism in the country's economic, housing, education,  and other policies — the right to equitable access to voting information still remains out of reach within Black, Latino, and Indigenous communities and for other people of color.  Dr. Weber’s background and long history in public service fighting for civil rights, public safety, education reform, and voting rights make her an excellent choice for California’s next Secretary of State, and Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California looks forward to working with her.”
