Sacramento – Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California (PPAC) CEO Jodi Hicks, on behalf of the 108 Planned Parenthood health centers across the state, is pleased to congratulate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra on his recent appointment as United States Health and Human Services Secretary in the Biden Administration:

“Planned Parenthood in California applauds the decision by the Biden-Harris administration to nominate California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as our nation’s next Health and Human Services Secretary. Mr. Becerra’s nomination is a significant step in making good on the Administration’s promise to prioritize the health care needs of the American people as we grapple with the public health crisis of COVID-19 and continue to fight widening health care inequities.

“From his time in Congress to serving as California’s Attorney General, Mr. Becerra has been a decades-long champion for health care for all, including sexual and reproductive health care access. Time and time again, he’s been monumental in leading only California, and even a coalition of Attorneys General, in fighting to address health care inequities and further critical access to care—from fighting back the Title X domestic gag rule to championing birth control access to defending the Affordable Care Act that is now at the U.S. Supreme Court.

“As the Affordable Care Act hangs in the balance, following the Supreme Court’s recent hearing, it remains true that no state has more to lose than California. The ACA has been monumental in the fight for gender equity and health care access, and Mr. Becerra’s intimate knowledge of the California landscape will be hugely important not only for the millions of residents here that rely on the ACA, but across the country.

“As we enter a new era of leadership, we also face a conservative majority on the U.S. Supreme Court which poses as a direct threat to reproductive freedom, LGBTQ+ rights, and access to high-quality, affordable health care. And we know any potential attacks upon rights and access will harm the very Black, Latinx, and Indigenous communities who are being disproportionality impacted by COVID-19 and who already face health care inequities deepened by systemic gender and racial discrimination. Mr. Becerra’s long history of fighting for these communities will be paramount for charting the future of our nation’s health.”

“As our nation continues to face an unprecedented health crisis with the COVID-19 pandemic, there is no better advocate to help guide us through the next phase of response than AG Becerra. His commitment to his constituents, coupled with his institutional experience, will ensure that COVID-19, and any public health crisis facing the country, will be met with preparedness and leadership.”

Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California has long supported Becerra - most recently endorsing his 2018 campaign for the statewide office.
