Planned Parenthood’s Statement on the Trump Administration’s Announced Action Regarding California’s Abortion Access Coverage Requirements

SACRAMENTO – Jodi Hicks, President/CEO of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, issued the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s announced action against California because of the state’s requirement that health insurance plans cover abortion:

“This is the same tired tactic we have seen from the Trump Administration in its attempts to restrict and ban access to abortion. California law guarantees the right to abortion access and coverage, as aligned with the US Supreme Court’s ruling in Roe v. Wade. Furthermore, California courts have declared that health plans must treat abortion and pregnancy care equally, as they are both basic health care services under California law.

“The Trump Administration’s singling out of California’s health insurance coverage requirements, just as California leaders and Planned Parenthood announced legislation to expand access to abortion coverage, is a direct attack upon California, especially among its most marginalized communities. Access to abortion is law of the land and California will not back down in our fight to defend and expand, not ban, access to abortion.”
