CONCORD -- Responding to reporting this week that Bill O’Brien compared abortion rights to slavery and 9/11, Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund strongly condemned U.S. Senate candidate Bill O’Brien’s comments as outrageous and disqualifying.

Statement from Sabrina Dunlap, VP of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood NH Action Fund:

“Bill O’Brien’s recent comments about abortion care are an outrageous attack on reproductive rights and are dramatically out of step with the vast majority of Granite Staters. Mr. O’Brien’s remarks are cruel and dishonest -- this type of shameful rhetoric is not welcome in the Granite State. In contrast to O’Brien’s attacks on reproductive health care, Senator Shaheen has consistently put protecting access to quality, affordable health care above politics and has been a global champion for reproductive health. Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund looks forward to continuing educating voters about how extreme politicians like Mr. O’Brien are trying to roll back the clock on reproductive rights and how champions like Senator Shaheen will continue to defend those rights.”

O’Brien is one of several New Hampshire Republicans -- all of whom have expressed extreme animosity toward abortion rights -- challenging reproductive health champion Sen. Shaheen.

Support for abortion rights in New Hampshire is higher than almost anywhere else in the country, and Roe v. Wade is at a record national high of 77%. The vast majority of people, especially Granite Staters, believe that personal, private medical decisions should be between a patient and their doctor, not politicians.

Background:

During her time in the U.S. Senate, Sen. Shaheen has proven herself as a leader when it comes to protecting and expanding access to reproductive health care. Senator Shaheen has:

  • introduced the Global HER Act to repeal the Global Gag Rule, a dangerous anti-abortion policy that risks the health and lives of women and girls around the world.

  • supported and defended mandatory insurance coverage for vital reproductive health services, and no-cost contraception as part of the Affordable Care Act.

  • fought back against efforts to allow employers to deny insurance coverage for birth control and other critical health care services.

  • and now she’s fighting to defend patients from the Trump administration’s cruel Title X gag rule, which risks health care access for more than 4 million lower-income and uninsured people nationwide, including 16,000 Granite Staters.
