2024 Georgia Legislative Session Recap

Throughout the 2024 Georgia Legislative Session, 2,107 bills were introduced. This year, we saw an unprecedented number of anti-LGBTQ+ bills. The Public Policy and Organizing team lobbied at the Capitol, worked with affinity organizations, and mobilized voters. The team worked tirelessly to defeat a large number of anti-LGBTQ+ and anti-sex education bills. These bills are intersectional with our mission of protecting access to reproductive rights. Through advocacy and leadership, we defeated all these pieces of legislation. Here are some of the bills that failed along with some pieces that passed and will affect Georgians moving forward.

Bills that failed:

HB 936 (Added to HB 1104)

A ban on the use of school facilities by transgender students. 

HB 1045 

Would have banned teachers from teaching K-12 students content relating to sexual orientation or gender identity. 

SB 141 (Added to HB 1104) 

A broad ban on medical care for transgender adolescents, including medications that delay puberty. 

SB 519 (Added to 1170) - A bill that would’ve put a ban on puberty blockers for minors.

HB 1036 (Subbed to 298) 

Requires an ultrasound to be shown to high school students, reinforcing the reality of pregnancy and the truth about human development. 

SB 532 (Added to 1104) 

A ban on teaching sex education to K-5 students.

Religious Freedom Restoration Act; meant to preserve religious freedom 

HB 1128 -

“Women's Bill of Rights” - would have allowed for separate sex-based accommodations where privacy, safety, or biology are involved.

Now that it’s over, we encourage you to stay informed and updated during each legislative session and if bills are introduced or passed that you disagree with, make sure that you make your voice heard. Lawmakers do not hear from constituents as much as you may think, so your voice can make a big difference to causes like ours.
