HUNTSVILLE, AL – Last night, Marilyn Lands, the first endorsed candidate of this election cycle by Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates (PPSEA), achieved a resounding victory over her Republican opponent in Alabama House District 10. Lands secured an impressive 62.4% of the vote, running on a platform focused on repealing Alabama’s no-exceptions abortion ban, fully restoring access to IVF, and safeguarding the right to contraceptives. This triumph not only underscores the strength of these issues in the Southeast but also marks a significant momentum shift heading into November. This win follows a series of wins with abortion access on the ballot from 2022, 2023, and now in 2024.

“Last month, Alabama families suffered the loss of access to fertility treatments due to partisan maneuvers that sought to further restrict our reproductive rights through codified personhood language. Last night, Alabama voters reaffirmed what we have always known: that advocating for IVF and abortion access resonates deeply across the Southeast, including in states like Alabama, Georgia, and Mississippi. This victory serves as both an inspiration and a call to action as we embark on this election season, and we are committed to continuing our support for unwavering pro-choice candidates at every level of government,” stated Carol McDonald, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates.

PPSEA utilized its media presence, social and digital outreach, and regional connections to propel Lands' campaign to victory. With guidance and support from PPSEA, Lands aired advertisements promoting IVF and no-exceptions abortion rights, effectively amplifying her message throughout the region. This win heralds the beginning of a new era of political influence and electoral strength for PPSEA in the post-Roe landscape, signaling the progress that lies ahead in the months and years to come.
