Guest Blog: I Stand With Planned Parenthood (ISWPP) Organizing Summit

The ISWPP Organizing Summit was my first official training summit with Planned Parenthood since the start of my internship this past Fall. I was really excited to participate in the summit when it was originally planned back in the Fall but was postponed due to Hurricane Irma.

As I anticipated my weekend for this summit I was most excited to attend the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges & Universities) summit because as an HBCU student at Johnson C. Smith I was able to engage with the current PP Generation Action chapters at these institutions to see what work is occurring and how I could initially start a chapter at my own school. The sessions within the HBCU summit allowed me to understand how reproductive justice and sex education can be taught through PPGen on an HBCU campus. From this summit I am taking back tips and tools to start my own PPGen chapter along with ways to organize events that I have already started planning.

After the HBCU summit, I was able to dive right into the ISWPP summit. I really was shocked by the amount of people in the room honestly. I enjoyed interacting with people from across the country and seeing what their own work is like at their affiliates. Saturday and Sunday of the weekend allowed me to introduce myself to the PPGen chapters within NC which essentially allowed me to aid and learn from these young ladies. I did take away some great skills from the sessions throughout the weekend that will be going towards my day of action, the establishment of my PPGen chapter, and the other events I want to do on my campus and other campuses in Charlotte.
