Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic Launches TV Ads to Support Gov. Cooper’s Veto of Dangerous Abortion Ban
For Immediate Release: May 10, 2023
WILMINGTON — Today, Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic launched television ads in the Wilmington metropolitan area following the General Assembly’s passage of Senate Bill 20, a sweeping bill that will ban abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy in most circumstances and impose an array of other restrictions in the state that will severely limit abortion access before 12 weeks. The six-figure broadcast television buy will run for the next two weeks to highlight the promises made by Republican Representative Ted Davis to oppose further restrictions on abortion. When asked about abortion access in October 2022, Davis stated, “I support what the law is in North Carolina right now.” Governor Roy Cooper has stated he will veto the abortion ban on Saturday, May 13.
“This extreme legislation will put North Carolinians' lives at risk and make it nearly impossible for poor and working-class people to access the reproductive health care they need,” said Alison Kiser, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Votes! South Atlantic. “We know abortion bans lead to higher rates of maternal and infant mortality and substandard health care. North Carolinians deserve better. We urge Representative Davis to honor his commitment to the community he serves and protect access to essential health care.”
Representative Davis previously said during a candidate forum that pressure from House Speaker Moore did not inform how he votes on abortion, stating “The speaker does not tell me what to do. … I will vote to keep it just the way it is.”
Representative Davis was absent for the May 4 House vote on Senate Bill 20. All North Carolina Democratic legislators voted against the bill. Governor Cooper, reproductive rights advocates, and voters are calling upon key Republican legislators who campaigned on promises to oppose new abortion bans to uphold the impending veto.
