NORTH CAROLINA — Republican leaders in the North Carolina General Assembly have once again failed the people of North Carolina in order to deliver more tax cuts for the wealthy, gut public education, and hoard their own power. In the same year that state lawmakers severely restricted access to abortion, they are giving more than $20 million in taxpayer funds to anti-abortion, anti-LGBTQ organizations that lie to pregnant people seeking abortion care and only exist to dissuade someone from having an abortion. This is by far the most money ever given to these sham organizations that are generally unregulated, unlicensed, and target people experiencing financial hardship. To make matters worse, as more people are forced to carry a pregnancy and give birth against their will, state lawmakers have continued to restrict access to essential family planning services like birth control and pregnancy prevention programs. This budget is pure politics that will benefit the wealthy few and disregards the actual needs of North Carolinians. We deserve better.
