TODAY: South Carolina Court to Hear Arguments Over State’s Abortion Ban
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Today, May 2, at 9:30 a.m., Planned Parenthood Federation of America will argue in a hearing on its preliminary injunction over the state’s so-called “fetal heartbeat” abortion ban that went into effect last summer. The plaintiffs in the case are Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, Dr. Katherine Farris, and Taylor Shelton. They are asking the Court to clarify the ban’s definition of a “fetal heartbeat,” which was left unclear in the South Carolina Supreme Court’s decision finding that the ban was constitutional.
WHAT: Representatives from Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, and the plaintiff, Taylor Shelton, will be available for press outside the courthouse following the hearing.
WHEN: The hearing will commence on Thursday, May 2, at 9:30 a.m. and the speakers will be available following the hearing.
WHERE: Outside the main entrance to the Richland County Courthouse (1701 Main Street, Columbia, SC 29201)
WHO:
- Kyla Eastling, Staff Attorney for Planned Parenthood Federation of America representing the plaintiffs
- Susanna Birdsong, General Counsel for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
- Vicki Ringer, South Carolina Director of Public Affairs for Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
- Taylor Shelton, plaintiff
