MEMPHIS — Citing his steadfast commitment to abortion rights and reproductive justice, Tennessee Advocates for Planned Parenthood has endorsed Lee Harris for Shelby County Mayor.

“Lots of women in Shelby County are understandably fearful right now. Many believe that the end of abortion rights is a public health emergency with deadly consequences,” Harris said. “There’s a lot that county government can do to increase access to birth control and comprehensive sex education, and I’m honored to work with Planned Parenthood so that everyone in Shelby County has the health care they need.”

A former member of the Memphis City Council and Tennessee Senate Minority Leader, Harris was always a reliable vote against extreme abortion bans and restrictions, and as county mayor, he petitioned TennCare to better serve the needs of Planned Parenthood’s patients. He is seeking a second term as Shelby County Mayor in the Aug. 4 election against an anti-abortion extremist.

“We need leaders at every level who understand that abortion is health care and abortion saves lives,” said Francie Hunt, executive director of Tennessee Advocates for Planned Parenthood. “Now that the state government is forcing people to carry their pregnancies to term, we must support working families.

“Anyone in Shelby County who believes women should control their own destinies must vote for Lee Harris August 4.”
