Planned Parenthood is Defunded

What does this mean, and where do we go from here?

One Big Beautiful Bill Act

On July 4, 2025, President Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law. This sweeping piece of legislation defunded Planned Parenthood, and significantly cut federal Medicaid funding, making it more difficult for millions of Americans to access affordable health care.

We Fought Back

We didn’t throw our hands in the air and accept defeat. Planned Parenthood fought back, filing a lawsuit to pause this defunding effort. For a time, we were successful: a court granted a temporary order preventing the law from taking effect.

The Latest Blow

Unfortunately, on September 11, 2025 a court lifted a temporary pause, once again defunding Planned Parenthood by blocking Planned Parenthood health center’s access to federal Medicaid funds.

How Will This Impact Local Communities?

More than half of Planned Parenthood patients rely on Medicaid for essential care. Without Planned Parenthood, cancers go undetected, STIs go untreated, birth control isn’t available, and patients must travel farther and wait longer for care.

Locally, Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties sees over 130,000 Medicaid patients yearly, and no other provider can fill this gap.

Let's be clear: federal dollars have never paid for abortion.

By “defunding” Planned Parenthood and in turn, decimating reproductive health care access in states like California where abortion remains legal and state policies have expanded access, they can block people from accessing abortion and other essential health care services all together.

How We’re Continuing the Fight

The Community Action Fund of PPOSBC is firm in our commitment to the fight for reproductive rights. We are fighting harder than ever, and strategically working to unseat anti-abortion elected officials in the 2026 midterm elections.

We need you to join this fight so we can ensure that every person in our community has the freedom to access reproductive health care.

Together we can build momentum through storytelling, impactful personal conversations, and voter education.

Now’s your chance to take action and take your place in this fight.

What You Can Do

There is a special election in California on November 4, 2025. Make sure you are registered to vote. Even if you have registered in the past, if you’ve moved or changed your name, you need to regregister. It’s best to check your voter registration status before every election.

Vote YES on Prop 50 on November 4, 2025

Trump and his allies are trying to rig the 2026 midterm elections, and if they succeed, they’ll come after Planned Parenthood and reproductive rights with even more force. California can stop them.

Voting YES on Prop 50 is how we fight back — protecting our freedom, defending our communities, and leading the nation in standing up to their attacks. The stakes couldn’t be higher.

Thank/Spank Your Representative

Our representatives in Congress work for us. It’s our job to call out elected officials who support policies that harm our communities.

Find out how your representative voted, and call their office to either “Thank” or “Spank” them. Express how you feel about their vote. No need to be nervous, we have scripts and guidance to make it easy for you.

There are two representatives in Orange and San Bernardino Counties who voted to defund Planned Parenthood by voting “Yes” to passing the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

Prepare Yourself for Impactful Conversations

By engaging in meaningful conversations with people in our lives about the sweeping impacts of this bill, we can start to shift perspectives and educate others. In order to build these bridges, it’s important to prepare yourself with the facts.

We’ve put together helpful information and talking points so you can be ready to dive into conversation with your friends, peers, and loved ones. Tell them why this matters, and how it could impact them or their loved ones.

Tell Your Medicaid Story

Through storytelling, we can help people better understand the direct impact Medicaid has on people’s lives. Ever been between jobs and signed up for Medi-Cal in order to go to a doctor or visited a Planned Parenthood health center and used Medi-Cal to pay for services? Then you have a Medicaid story to share. Many Medicaid stories are not unique or groundbreaking, and the more we normalize this program, the more people will realize that Medicaid is a vital program that supports the health of their local community.
