Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona (PPAA) congratulates Tuesday’s primary winners in the Tucson City Elections who harnessed the grassroots energy built from elevating reproductive rights, immigrant rights, health care, and quality education as top campaign issues.

We are proud of the community centered, history making campaign run by Regina Romero for Tucson Mayor.  Regina Romero’s vision resonated with Tucson residents by unequivocally uniting people with a proven commitment to equity and inclusion when it comes to health care, immigrant rights, education, and environmental justice. Regina Romero and the Tucsonans who turned out for this primary demonstrate the path to victory includes standing up for reproductive freedom and dignity for all.

PPAA extends congratulations to endorsed candidates Lane Santa Cruz for Tucson Ward 1 and Nikki Lee for Tucson City Council Ward 4 who also championed and shared a people powered and inspired vision for Tucson going forward.

Statement by Lola Sophia Bovell, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona:

When you live, breathe, and work hard for values that unite and call in all people, you win. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona proudly celebrates the strength and determination demonstrated by all the women whose victories last night will fuel our future. Tucson boldly showed up and showed out to demand local leadership that will defy attempts to erode our collective human rights to health care, education, and the ability to determine our futures - futures in which immigrant families are not separated or  living in fear. Organizers and Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona supporters made their voices heard loud and clear by knocking on doors, energizing the electorate, and engaging on the issues that matter most to Arizonans. This is only the beginning. We will not be silent. We will not stand idly by as the status quo does not serve or speak to our communities. We will work together in solidarity with champions like Regina Romero, Lane Santa Cruz, and Nikki Lee who will ensure access to health care—including access to abortion—that does not depend on who you are, where you live, or how much money you make.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona knows that the majority of Arizona voters support candidates who oppose blocking access to care at Planned Parenthood. Polling shows that over 75% of Arizona families want their children to get age-appropriate, comprehensive, medically accurate sex education. Together with this group of diverse, community oriented candidates, Tucson can set the example of elected leadership’s ability to make change that creates stronger, healthier, and more empowered communities across the state.

Planned Parenthood ‘s advocacy and political arm in Arizona, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona (PPAA), is the state’s largest nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to protecting access to reproductive health care. PPAA is fighting for every person’s freedom and right to make reproductive choices, enjoy sexual health and wellbeing, and build healthy, strong families. Advocatesaz.org
