PHOENIX — June 23, 2023, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona endorsed champions and advocates for Mayor and City Council in the municipal primary and general elections in Tucson. Out of the three endorsed candidates, one - Lane Santa Cruz- is competing in the primary election on August 1, 2023. Early ballots go out for the primary in just a few weeks.

In a year without Roe, it has become increasingly clear that sexual and reproductive healthcare, rights, and freedom are held sacred and protected at the local level. It was local leaders - mayors, council members, and others - who made it clear that Tucson was not the community to mess with the reproductive rights of its members.

Regina Romero, running for re-election for Mayor, has led from the beginning, along with then-Vice Mayor Lane Santa Cruz, running for re-election from Ward 1, directing city resources to the most urgent needs, acknowledging that enforcing a nearly 150-year old abortion ban was not in the city’s “most urgent” category. And this action was taken prior to the Dobbs decision unraveling Roe and sending the regulation of abortion to the states. Tucson was preparing for what happened after Roe was gone.

With the leadership of Mayor Romero and Council Member Santa Cruz, along with Councilmember Lee, the City of Tucson exhibited what actions cities and municipalities could take in the context of settled law becoming unsettled overnight.

Statement from Jacob Martinez, Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona Board Co-Chair:

“Our rights and our health are on the ballot this August and this November, and it is more important than ever that we elect leaders that will fight for our values at all levels of government. Tucson was one of the first cities in the nation to take action to protect abortion access in preparation for the Dobbs decision that unraveled Roe. Planned Parenthood Advocates of Arizona is proud to endorse this strong slate of candidates that have committed to protecting access to reproductive health care and advancing policies to combat inequity in all its forms.”

Endorsed Candidates:

  • Mayor, Regina Romero
  • Ward 1, Lane Santa Cruz
  • Ward 4, Nikki Lee
