Report: Missouri's safety net cannot serve patients without Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is a crucial component of the health care safety net. 

Preventing Missourians from choosing Planned Parenthood leaves many without access to vital preventive care, including birth control, cancer screenings, and sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing and treatment.

At a time when regions of Missouri suffer from some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infection (STI) and infant and maternal mortality, Planned Parenthood affiliates in Missouri and associated entities* provide critical health and education services to over 46,000 women, men, and young people every year, including:

  • 79,544 STI Testing and Treatment Services
  • 5,336 Breast Exams
  • 913 HPV Vaccinations
  • 33,818 Female Contraception Patients
  • 5,745 Education Participants

Every $1.00 invested in publicly funded family planning services saves $7.09 in Medicaid expenditures that would otherwise be needed to pay the medical costs of pregnancy, delivery, and early childhood care. (Guttmacher Institute, 2014)

Of the 687,450 Missouri women in need of contraceptive care, 397,270 need publicly funded family planning services. (Guttmacher Institute, 2016)
