A statement from Mike Murray, Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin:

The Abortion Rights Preservation Act is an important step to safeguard abortion care in Wisconsin. Wisconsin has some of the strictest abortion access laws in the country. Even with Roe v. Wade setting a precedent for safe and legal abortion access nationwide, Wisconsin specific legislation has made access much harder to receive. The Abortion Rights Preservation Act removes Wisconsin’s outdated law from 1849 that would automatically make abortion at any point in pregnancy a crime if Roe v. Wade were overturned. Accessing health care is not a criminal act. It is imperative that this law, which is almost as old as our state itself, is repealed. Legislatures should hold the wellbeing of Wisconsinites above partisan politics.

With the six-justice conservative supermajority composition of the US Supreme Court and the fact that there are 17 cases potentially impacting abortion access that are that one step away from the Supreme Court, the threat to abortion access is real. Now is the time to protect safe, legal abortion in Wisconsin by passing laws like the Abortion Rights Preservation Act. Abortion is health care, and we believe everyone should be able to access the health care that they need without fear, shame or stigma.
