Both the Senate and Assembly will today hold hearings on multiple bills that are not based in the reality of providing health care. These bills are being brought forward solely to spread misinformation about abortion and distract from the popular health care proposals in Governor Tony Evers’ budget.

Statement from Mel Barnes, Legal and Policy Director at Planned Parenthood Advocates of Wisconsin:

“These bills are intended to intentionally mislead people about abortion care. They are being advanced by politicians who want to make all abortion a crime. Over the last several years, anti-women’s health politicians in Wisconsin have proven that they will stop at nothing to push their agenda to ban safe, legal abortion – including making horrific accusations that are not based in fact or medical science. These politically-motivated claims are false, offensive and meant to deceive the public about the realities of medical care.

“Abortion providers already comply with existing laws and are held to the highest standard of care, just like any other medical professional. Infanticide is illegal, and abortion later in pregnancy is already banned in Wisconsin.

“If the legislature truly cares about women and children, they should improve health outcomes in our state, by expanding Medicaid and supporting the Healthy Women, Healthy Babies initiative in Gov. Evers’ budget. Expanding Medicaid would mean more people, especially women and children, have access to the health care they need. That’s something we all should be able to agree on.”
