Interning with the Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund is a great way to learn about our work, advocate for our patients, and gain experience working for a nonprofit. Our interns are an integral part of our team and we couldn't do our work without them. Below are three internships listings (see descriptions below) for the Fall 2019 semester in either Portland or Bangor.

Public Affairs Intern

Portland, ME
Fall 2019

DESCRIPTION:
Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund is offering a part-time, unpaid (can be used for course credit) Public Affairs Internship at our Portland Administration offices, as well as opportunities to work at various locations around the state. Intern will undergo extensive training on how to speak with patients, supporters and voters about Planned Parenthood’s C3/C4 advocacy work. This is a hands-on opportunity for individuals seeking learning experiences related to macro social work, organizing and/or community outreach. Internship will include or be tailored to these responsibilities:

  • Movement Building
    • Assist with preparation & planning of volunteer events
    • Lead volunteer events & create a positive communal environment
    • Conduct legislative research
  • Canvassing
    • Meet voters at their door and engage with them about important issues
    • Door to Door Community Outreach about policy, legislation, and education
  • Phone Banking
    • Contacting constituents about current issues and policy
    • Volunteer recruitment
  • Data Entry
    • Maintaining data collection
    • Training volunteers
    • Experience with Excel, Word Press, VAN, video editing, SQL
  • Outreach Events
    • Participate in outreach opportunities at local events, festivals, fairs, etc
  • Patient Outreach
    • Through our Health Center Advocacy Program, collect patient stories and develop them for advocacy projects

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Passion for reproductive health
  • Preferred flexibility for weeknight/weekend availability
  • Campaign experience, or relevant experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated, able to work independently and problem solve
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Proficient computer skills

ROLE REQUIREMENTS:
All potential applicants will need to pass a background check before being accepted in the program. Intern will be required to make a minimum commitment of 10-15 hours a week. Generation Action Intern

Portland, ME
Fall 2019

DESCRIPTION:
Planned Parenthood of Northern New England is offering a part-time or full-time, can be used for course credit, Generation Action Internship at our Portland Administration offices and on your college campus. Intern will undergo extensive training on how to speak with supporters about Planned Parenthood’s advocacy work and ways to improve access to sexual and reproductive health services on college campuses. This is an ideal work experience for students interested in women’s issues or plans to have a career in non-profit agencies, politics, public affairs, government relations, or community outreach and marketing.

Generation Action is a movement of young people across identities and issues that organizes with, by, and for their generation in order to achieve reproductive freedom. College students work to improve access to meaningful sexual education and access to sexual and reproductive health services on their campuses and in their communities. We have Generation Action chapters at 8 different colleges and universities in Maine that are all overseen by our Campus Organizer.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Organizing
    • Navigate college administrations to support and implement Campus Campaign
    • Build power by collaborating with other campus groups, recruiting new group members, and engaging with the greater community
    • Create and lead trainings, workshops, and events in coordination with Campus Organizer to build power within campus groups.
  • Outreach Events
    • Designing and running events on campus to educate and support the student body
  • Data Entry
    • Learning and entering in data collected
    • Tracking events, participants, and volunteers recruited

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Enrolled in a Maine University
  • Good listening skills
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; experience in public speaking a plus
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Interest in reproductive health care, education, and women’s issues
  • Ability to communicate with public about PPNNE health services, mission and goals
  • Previous canvassing experience a plus, but not required
  • Weekend and night time availability
