Planned Parenthood Action Fund digital ad campaign highlights Collins' role jeopardizing Roe v Wade
For Immediate Release: March 4, 2020 (Updated: March 4, 2020, 3:47 p.m.)
This morning Planned Parenthood Action Fund launched a high six-figure digital ad campaign highlighting the ways Donald Trump and key US Senators including Susan Collins have put Roe and safe, legal abortion at risk.
You can see the Senator Collins ad here.
The launch of the ad campaign coincides with oral arguments before the Supreme Court in June Medical Services v. Russo. The case challenges a medically unnecessary abortion restriction in Louisiana that is nearly identical to one of the laws the Court struck down four years ago in Whole Woman’s Health v. Hellerstedt in 2016.
The only real difference in the cases is that Justice Kennedy, the deciding opinion in Whole Woman’s Health, has been replaced by Justice Kavanaugh, who has a record hostile to reproductive health and rights, including abortion.
If the Court upholds the Louisiana law in defiance of its own precedent, it could jeopardize the protections for safe, legal abortion set in Roe v Wade---or even overturn Roe itself.
This will be the first abortion case Justice Kavanaugh has heard, though he did dissent in the court’s decision to temporarily block the new Louisiana law from taking effect pending the results of the case.
Senator Collins was critical to Justice Kavanaugh’s confirmation, insisting in her floor speech that “his views on honoring precedent would preclude attempts to do by stealth that which one has committed not to do overtly” to overturn Roe v. Wade, and has doubled-down on her defense in spite of his support of the Louisiana abortion restriction law.
