Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC Endorses Nicole Grohoski in State Senate Special Election

SCOTUS preparing to overturn Roe v Wade, Maine needs legislators who will protect access to abortion

The Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC is endorsing Nicole Grohoski of Ellsworth in the State Senate District 7 special election to be held June 14th. 

Also in June, the Supreme court is expected to issue a decision in Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization on Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban. Monday night,  Politico published a leaked draft Supreme Court majority opinion that explicitly overturns Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. The draft majority opinion, written by Justice Alito, openly overrules Roe and Casey, stating that “Roe was egregiously wrong from the start” and “we hold that Roe and Casey must be overruled.” 

Without the protections of Roe, states will be able to ban and restrict abortion. In the first two months of 2022, legislators introduced 519 abortion restrictions in 41 states and 82 abortion bans in 30 states.

Maine is not immune: last year anti-abortion legislators introduced an unprecedented number of bills attacking abortion care in Maine. With a majority of legislators supportive of access to abortion, the House and Senate defeated all of the bills, but the makeup of the legislature could change with the next election -- giving anti-abortion politicians in Maine another chance to restrict or ban abortion as states like Texas, Oklahoma, Idaho, Kentucky, and Florida have done.

Monday’s leaked opinion is horrifying and unprecedented, and it confirms that the Supreme Court is prepared to end the constitutional right to abortion by overturning Roe v. Wade. To protect our rights, we must ensure we have lawmakers like Nicole Grohoski who are committed to keeping abortion legal in Maine. As a state representative, Nicole Grohoski has maintained a 100% voting record with the Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund and she will continue to be a strong voice for sexual and reproductive health care in the state senate. The Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund PAC is proud to endorse Nicole Grohoski for state senate.

The special election for state senate district 7 will be held Tuesday, June 14th, 2022. Voters in SD 7 can request an absentee ballot from the Secretary of State’s office or vote early in-person at their town offices during regular office hours.
