Nearly two-thirds of legislators in Maine have earned a 100% voting record with the Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund for the 2021-2022 legislative years, including all of the Democrats in the Maine State Senate.

In 2021, anti-abortion legislators introduced an unprecedented number of bills attacking abortion care in Maine. With a majority of legislators supportive of access to abortion, the House and Senate defeated all of the bills.

In 2022, lawmakers passed new laws to close an insurance loophole for birth control, protect patient safety, and address inequities in MaineCare payments to sexual and reproductive health care providers.

With the Supreme Court preparing to overturn Roe v Wade, state legislators and governors will determine whether or not abortion remains legal in each state. Legal abortion has been protected in Maine state law since 1993 when the Reproductive Privacy Act became law. While Governor Janet Mills and nearly two-thirds of current legislators support abortion rights, that can all change with the November election.

Statement from Nicole Clegg, Senior Vice President of Public Affairs for the Planned Parenthood Maine Action Fund

“While Maine law currently protects the legal right to abortion, laws can be changed. Elections matter. If a majority of anti-abortion politicians take control of the legislature or the Blaine House, they could pass laws restricting or even banning abortion. While in the minority, anti-abortion politicians have tried to force providers to lie to patients, take away health insurance coverage of abortion, shame and stigmatize abortion patients, and mandate medically-unnecessary delays and procedures before abortion. Imagine what they could do if they were in the majority.

“Mainers will vote this fall and many of the current legislators with a 100% voting record will be up for re-election. We urge all Mainers to ask their local candidates what they will do to keep abortion legal in Maine and ensure all Mainers can get abortion care when they need it. “
