Thursday’s Executive Session To Determine Future of Abortion Rights in New Hampshire
For Immediate Release: Jan. 17, 2024
On Thursday at 9 am, the House Judiciary Committee will determine the future of abortion rights in New Hampshire with the executive session consideration of three pieces of legislation:
-
CACR 23, which aims to solidify the right to an abortion in the New Hampshire Constitution
-
HB 1248, which proposes an extreme 15-day abortion ban in New Hampshire
-
HB 1541, which proposes unreasonable limitations on abortion after 15 weeks that have no basis in medicine or science
Last week, dozens of Granite Staters gathered in Concord at a House Judiciary Committee meeting where lawmakers heard public testimony on these bills. The constituents overwhelmingly supported codifying abortion rights in New Hampshire’s constitution and opposed new restrictions on abortion access:
-
CACR 23: 1,713 Support | 303 Oppose
-
HB 1248: 1,358 Oppose | 27 Support
-
HB 1541: 1,334 Oppose | 29 Support
In advance of the upcoming executive session, Kayla Montgomery, Vice President for Public Affairs of Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, issued the following statement in support of CACR 23:
“Everyone deserves the right and ability to make their own decision about pregnancy, in consultation with their trusted health care provider. But now that the Supreme Court has overturned Roe, there are no longer any federal or state protections in place for the right to abortion in New Hampshire. CACR 23 would permanently ensure that this essential civil liberty is protected - and will take politics out of the equation.
“In a post-Roe America, the only way to permanently safeguard the fundamental right to safe, legal, and accessible abortion in New Hampshire is through the passage of a constitutional amendment. Granite Staters expect their state lawmakers to take action in 2024, and sending CACR 23 to the voters is an important first step.”
In advance of the upcoming executive session, Liz Canada, Advocacy Director at Planned Parenthood New Hampshire Action Fund and Planned Parenthood of Northern New England, issued the following statement opposing the two extreme anti-abortion bills (HB 1248 and HB 1541):
“Extreme lawmakers introduce abortion bans every year in New Hampshire - but with Roe v Wade gone and no legal protections in our state for abortion rights, both of these abortion bans are extraordinarily dangerous.
“These bills ban and deeply restrict abortion, and they disregard science, best medical practices, criminalize physicians, challenge the expertise of health care providers, and presume that politicians know more about providing medical care than the state’s highly-qualified health care providers.
“It’s time for extreme attacks on abortion rights like these to end once and for all. These bills are dangerous. These bills are deeply unpopular. And they must be defeated.”
The next step after Thursday’s Executive Session is a full House floor vote. For more information on the proposed legislation or to connect with a Planned Parenthood Northern New England spokesperson, contact [email protected] or (603) 715-4321.
