Resolution also defines life beginning at fertilization
Bismarck, ND — Last week, a NDGOP state committee approved a resolution to be voted on at the state convention that would bring criminal charges against pregnant people for obtaining an abortion, and others involved in the procedure. It also defines life as beginning at fertilization, which is a religious or personal belief and not a medical consensus.
Last year politicians passed a near total abortion ban, SB 2150. The only exceptions include very narrow circumstances where a pregnant person’s life is at risk, and an exception for survivors of rape or incest, but only until six weeks of pregnancy, before most people even know they are pregnant. The ban forces doctors to choose between providing medically accurate, comprehensive reproductive health care or breaking the law.
Statement from Katie Christensen, North Dakota State Director, External Affairs for Planned Parenthood North Dakota Action Fund:
“This resolution is dangerous to North Dakotans, and cruel to all pregnant people. Abortion is essential and sometimes lifesaving health care, and North Dakotans deserve to make decisions about their bodies and futures. Anti-abortion politicians aren’t satisfied with banning abortion and stripping people of their bodily autonomy – they want to criminalize pregnant people for making personal health care decisions, and their loved ones for helping them access the care they need. With travel bans popping up across the nation and an Ohio woman facing criminal charges after a miscarriage, this resolution is a preview to the dangerous and damning policy we could see introduced in our state next year. They will not stop until they have absolute control over North Dakotans’ bodies.”
