Birth control is essential health care supported by most Americans
Bismarck, ND —Yesterday, U.S. Senator Kevin Cramer and Senator John Hoeven voted against the Right to Contraception Act. The bill would have established the right to access birth control and a health care provider's right to provide contraception and related information. It failed to reach the 60 votes required to bring it to the floor for a vote in the U.S. Senate.
Birth control is a safe and easy way to prevent pregnancy. Birth control can also help treat certain health problems and provide health benefits, such as making periods lighter and less painful, and helping prevent STIs.
Access to birth control is supported by a vast majority of Americans spanning party lines — 86 percent of Americans (including 91 percent of Democrats and 83 percent of Republicans) support policies that make it easier to get the full range of birth control methods.
Statement from Katie Christensen, North Dakota State Director, External Affairs for Planned Parenthood Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota Action Fund:
“North Dakotans deserve to make decisions about their bodies and futures, and that includes full access to birth control. Access to contraception has never been more important as North Dakotans live under a near total abortion ban. It is deplorable that North Dakota senators voted against protections for birth control access, which nearly all Americans support. Anti-abortion politicians clearly aren’t satisfied with banning abortion and stripping people of their bodily autonomy. They will not stop until they have absolute control over North Dakotans’ bodies.”
