(Harrisburg, Pa.) – As the regulatory component of Senate Bill 1 directly impacts access to sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion, Planned Parenthood PA PAC will be scoring votes on the legislation and considering it in future endorsements.

“The constitutional amendment proposed in Senate Bill 1 gives the anti-abortion legislature the ability to override the regulations that make abortion accessible in this state,” said PPPA Executive Director Signe Espinoza. “We have been very clear with members of the legislature that Planned Parenthood PA opposes this bill, and have explained that opposition with very practical examples. Those who have chosen to vote for it, or are considering doing so in the House, will have that reflected in their reproductive health care advocacy score should they seek our endorsement next time they appear on the ballot.”

The legislature could use its newly expanded power to prevent state agencies from addressing some of our most pressing practical needs:

  •  For example, the legislature would have the power to reject regulations that would make telemedicine more available to people seeking reproductive health care, including abortion.
  • This amendment would give the legislature the power to reject changes to our regulation of abortion clinics that would bring our state policies up to date and more in line with the actual needs of patients.
  •  What's more, outside of the area of sexual and reproductive health, this could have huge implications for our state including in environmental regulation, access to medical marijuana, and protections for workers

“We no longer have the federal protections of Roe v Wade that we lived under for nearly 50 years. Now is certainly not the time to compromise on access to care,” continued Espinoza.
