PENNSYLVANIA —  Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates and Planned Parenthood Votes congratulate Pennsylvania Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro on his victory in the PA Governor’s race tonight, and urge officials to count every vote cast in Pennsylvania. Voters have turned out in record numbers, and with Pennsylvanians voting both by mail and in person, it could be several days until all votes are counted.

Statement from Signe Espinoza, executive director, Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates:

“Congratulations to Gov.-elect Josh Shapiro. Josh has been unwavering in his support for abortion rights  in Pennsylvania, and voters know that he will continue fighting for reproductive freedom when he’s sworn in as our next governor. Planned Parenthood Pennsylvania Advocates endorsed Josh even before the Supreme Court took away our federal right to abortion because we knew that having him at the governor’s desk is critical for Pennsylvanians’ health. His veto pen may be the last line of defense against dangerous and discriminatory abortion bans. The work continues to ensure every Pennsylvanian has access to the care they need. Not only do we need Gov.-elect Shapiro to protect our right to abortion, we must work together  to expand access for all Pennsylvanians, regardless of who they are, where they live, or how much money they make.”

Statement from Cortney Bouse, state director, Planned Parenthood Votes in Pennsylvania:

“This election season, Planned Parenthood Votes in Pennsylvania reached hundreds of thousands of voters, and those voters turned out to support our reproductive freedom. Now, we must make sure that every vote is counted. It might mean that the final results do not come tonight, or even tomorrow,  but Pennsylvanians are patient. They know that democracy takes time and that every voter deserves to decide what is best for their lives and futures. Planned Parenthood Votes and its partners urge election officials to count every ballot, whether cast in person or by mail, because our democracy depends on it.”
