We believe all people should have access to safe, legal abortion.
On June 24, 2022, the United States Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, obliterating federal protections to abortion. In South Dakota, a trigger law passed in 2005 immediately went into effect, banning all abortions in the state. Since then, South Dakotans needing care have had to travel across state lines to access abortion.
Abortion should be safe, legal, and accessible. South Dakotans have shown their support for this essential health care on two different statewide ballot initiatives. For more than twenty years, South Dakotans fought to protect abortion access and keep the doors open for the sole abortion provider in the state, a Planned Parenthood health center in Sioux Falls.
Beyond the state of South Dakota and under a second Trump administration, expected federal attacks on abortion loom, including the ongoing threat to restrict access to mifepristone, one of the two medications used in medication abortion.
And the relentless attacks continue despite the fact that nearly 8 in 10 Americans support Planned Parenthood and a growing number of Americans support access to safe, legal abortion. The support has reached historic highs following the Dobbs decision and the consequences of 19 states banning abortion become clear.
We are committed to fighting these efforts on every level. From courthouses to statehouses to Capitol Hill to the grassroots—we work to protect access to reproductive health care through education of elected officials, litigation, and mobilization of activists, donors, supporters, and patients.
Our future doesn't have to be this way and we can build something better than what we had. Together we can build a better future for South Dakotans.
