We believe everyone has the right to live full, healthy lives as their authentic selves, free from discrimination or violence.

Anti-LGBTQ legislators in South Dakota have a history of denying the humanity and rights of transgender people. In 2016, the South Dakota legislature passed a bill forcing transgender students in public schools to use the bathrooms and locker rooms that matched their sex assigned at birth. This bill was vetoed by Gov. Daugaard in a major victory for LGBTQ activists and allies. Despite that, a similar bill was introduced in the 2017 legislative session.

Two more bills attacking the rights of transgender people have been narrowly defeated in the last two years: A bill forcing transgender student athletes to play on sports teams that align with the sex they were assigned at birth, and a bill that would make it a felony to provide a minor transgender hormone therapy—even if the minor has parental consent.

Every person, regardless of gender identity or expression, deserves to live a full, healthy life. We are committed to fighting against discrimination to make South Dakota a comfortable and safe place for all of its residents.

Planned Parenthood North Central States is proud to provide transgender hormone therapy at all 29 health center locations—because everyone deserves access to high-quality, supportive care.

Transgender and gender non-conforming people share the same fundamental need for quality health care and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. Planned Parenthood is committed to ensuring patients receive the welcoming, high-quality care they need, no matter what.
