Statement from Dyana Limon-Mercado, Executive Director, Planned Parenthood Texas Votes

“Sen. Kirk Watson (D-Austin) has been one of Planned Parenthood’s fiercest allies in the fight to protect reproductive health care access and rights for all Texans, including back in 2013 when Sen. Watson helped make then-Sen. Wendy Davis’ historic 13-hour filibuster against the strictest anti-abortion laws in the country a success in its final moments and launched a new generation of activists.

“Sen. Watson has stood in support of Planned Parenthood patients for the entire length of his public service career, and we will greatly miss his unwavering leadership, his commitment to defending women’s health, and his ability to work across the aisle in the Texas Legislature. Sen. Watson most recently strenghtened protections for victims of sexual abuse and spearheaded the effort to reject vote purge leader David Whitley’s nomination as Secretary of State.

“A formidable progressive champion who has always put the health and rights of his constituents first -- Sen. Watson is the type of legislator we could always count on and we are incredibly fortunate to have had him on our side. We know that Sen. Watson will remain a  strong advocate for reproductive health and rights in his new role at the University of Houston, and we look forward to his continued wisdom, guidance and partnership in the years to come.”
