Houston, TX – March 3, 2022 – Tuesday, voters across Texas delivered a wave of victories for reproductive rights champions. The results of these elections are a clear demonstration of the support abortion access and Planned Parenthood has throughout the state.

The vast majority of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes endorsed candidates came out on top on Tuesday. Thirteen out of 15 PPTV-endorsed statewide or Texas Legislature candidates won their primary or are headed to a runoff and three of four endorsed candidates for Harris County seats will be advancing to the General Election.

In HD 142, while the results did not favor the PPTV-endorsed candidate Candis Houston, the race was one of the most narrow margins across the state, with Houston coming within 136 votes. Throughout her campaign, Houston centered education, health care and reproductive rights in her campaign. Houston ran a grassroots, community-driven campaign that contrasted her against the 38-year Democratic incumbent who has a history of politicizing the rights of
transgender students. Planned Parenthood is one of the leading providers of gender affirming care in Texas, providing services at 18 health centers across the state.

The following statement can be attributed to Drucilla Tigner, Deputy Director of Strategic Campaigns and Partnerships at Planned Parenthood Texas Votes:

“This election was our first chance to fight back against the relentless attacks on reproductive health and rights since Senate Bill 8 was enacted and our supporters are energized by these election results. We know we face an uphill battle in the Texas legislature – where anti-choice politicians have spent the last decade dismantling access to sexual and reproductive health care, including abortion – but in this primary election we’ve elected champions up and down the ballot. We look forward to further victories in November.

"In HD 142, we are incredibly proud to have supported Candis Houston’s campaign to bring a voice to our most vulnerable communities. Candis’s campaign was built on unapologetically progressive values, including the inherent dignity and worth of all Texans. Candis and the voters and volunteers who supported her ran a competitive campaign against a nearly 40-year incumbent and made this race much closer than many expected. We hope that her near-victory is a wake-up call for politicians that use the bodily autonomy of trans youth as political bargaining chips.”
