Abortion Rights Champions Sweep Harris County Commissioners Court & Hold Onto State House Seats

Austin, TX  — Yesterday, 100% of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes endorsed incumbents won reelection, including Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo – ushering in a four-to-one abortion rights champion super majority of the Harris County Commissioners Court. Overall, 51 Planned Parenthood Texas Votes endorsed candidates won their races across the state. These are crucial wins for abortion rights in Texas, as each of these candidates made restoring abortion access a centerpiece of their campaigns.

Other races headed towards a win include endorsed candidates Mihaela Plesa in HD 70 and Morgan LaMantia in SD 27, likely winning two of the most hotly contested legislative races in the state. Both LaMantia and Plesa ran with support for abortion access as a defining issue of their campaign. Lesley Briones in Harris County rounds out challenger victories for the night, winning the Harris County Commissioner Precinct Four race and ensuring a super-majority for sexual and reproductive health champions on the Commissioners Court of Texas’ largest county.

Voters want elected officials who are bold champions for abortion access and this outcome was only possible because of the wide support for abortion access among Texans of all walks of life.

Statement from Drucilla Tigner, Deputy Director, Strategic Campaigns and Partnerships  of Planned Parenthood Texas Votes:

“Widespread support for abortion access redefined the dynamics of this election. Despite national projections, Texans elected pro-abortion champions down the ballot, proving that we won’t back down when politicians come for our rights. Contending with Republican gerrymandering and massive amounts of money coming in from outside interest groups, these races show that abortion is a winning issue among Texans.

The victories secured tonight will make a huge difference in protecting against further restrictions to reproductive rights. Planned Parenthood Texas Votes will continue to fight for reproductive freedom for all Texans no matter what, and these newly elected and re-elected champions are critical to representing the voices of the 1.2 million Planned Parenthood supporters across the state.”
