Richmond, VA – Paulette McElwain, President and CEO of The Virginia League for Planned Parenthood, today announced Faye Belgrave, Ph.D., and Tom Perriello will join the nonprofit’s board of directors.

“We are proud to announce the addition of Faye and Tom to our board of directors. Faye Belgrave, Ph.D.

Faye Z. Belgrave, Ph.D., is professor of psychology and the founding director of the Center for Cultural Experiences in Prevention at Virginia Commonwealth University. Her programmatic and research interests are in the areas of drug and HIV prevention among African Americans and other ethnic minorities. Much of her work has been conducted collaboratively with community organizations and is aimed at promoting positive youth development by increasing positive cultural values and preventing risky behaviors. This has included work on gender and culturally specific interventions. Dr. Belgrave has published extensively in the area of African American psychology and is an invited speaker on this topic. She has been recognized with many awards for her research, teaching, and service, including awards from the Association of Black Psychologists, the American Psychological Association, and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration. Dr. Belgrave received her Ph.D. from the University of Maryland and her BS from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University.

Tom Perriello

Tom Perriello has a track record of fighting corruption, expanding economic fairness, and promoting reconciliation as a non-profit executive, diplomat, teacher, Congressman and 2017 candidate for Virginia governor. While representing Virginia’s 5th district in Congress, Perriello leveraged over $580 million dollars of investment in broadband, education, clean energy, and small business development for Virginia communities too often left behind. At the State Department, he led a strategic review to modernize and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of operations spanning over $50 billion and 80,000 employees. He was then appointed as Special Envoy for the Great Lakes Region of Africa where he helped prevent mass atrocities and broker an historic peace deal to turn the page on a decades-long conflict in the Congo. He previously ran non-profit organizations that tackle inequality, corruption, racial injustice, and climate change.
